Balder ForestStrider
Balder is a tall young man with dirty blond hair and blue eye from Tristan. His mother is unknown to him as she died during childbirth. His father was a ranking member in the southern guard, who are charged with protecting the Vale from the many dangers that come from the wilds. From an early are Balder’s father started grooming him for life in the guard. As a young boy Balder set about the tasks his father set with great enthusiasm. When Balder was about 8 years of age his father was set to be sent off on a mission that he was unable to explain to his young son. Upset with his father for his secrecy Balder wished that his father would never come back. His father’s lasts words to him “One day Balder, you will regret those words”. It was two weeks before Balder heard anything else of his father. On that fateful day that his father’s sergeant nocked on the door, head hung low and sullen faced. Nothing but his father’s long sword was found.
Filled with grief and taking tacking his father’s sword Balder fled from his aunt, for it was she that cared for him when his father was on rotation. He ran deep into the forest, he had only one thing on his mind. He would find and destroy the creatures that had taken his father. For three days and nights he traveled deeper into the forest, by the fourth day he hopelessly lost. Hunger and grief finally overcame him and he collapsed. It was there, heaped in a ball, sobbing to himself that his life changed. “Why do you cry little boy?” a soft, genital voice came from behind him. Startled Balder rolled and jumped to his feet, “I’m not crying and I’m not little!” He found that he had just yelled at a pretty young woman who was wearing dirty close. “Who are you?” Balder managed to stammer out. “I am the tree, I am the wind, and I am the creatures. May I ask who you are, and what one such as yourself is doing so deep into the forest?” With a blush Balder delved into his story of the past few days. “I am truly sorry for your loss young one.” The lady said whole heartedly. “I sense a great strength within you, you my dear child are Gifted, and because of this I will teach you the ways of nature.”
With that Balder life as a ranger began. The woman, who he learned was named Tivona, came to him and taught him the ways of nature and of balance. When her lesson was do she vanished to leave Balder to fend for himself and to put into practice Tivona’s lessons. Balder’s life went like this for ten years, in that time Balder became a strong and confident young man. But for all he had learned from Tivona his heart was still full of anger and hatred for the foul creatures that had taken his father from his life.
One morning the wolf that has stalked him sense as long as he could remember entered his little camp. “So you’ve finally decided to come out of the shadows have you?” Balder glanced at the wolf in time to see it shape warp and shift into a familiar form, Tivona now stood before him. Balder had suspected that the wolf had been sent by her but never had he thought that is was her! “Balder after everything I’ve taught you are you really surprised?” Still speechless all Balder could do was shake his head. “Today will be your last here Balder, I have taught you all that I can and you have grown strong. I had hoped when you were younger that the anger in your heart would fade, but it is still far too strong. There for I cannot teach you further.” This revelation weighed his heart, “I am sorry I’ve failed you Tivona.” With a warm smile she continued. “Not a failure, just a different path. My last task for you, take this the King Kaden of the Vale. Show it to him and he will know what it is. Now go with grace young one.” She handed him a palm sized bundle of vines. He put it into a pouch on his belt and when he looked up Tivona had again become the wolf. Before Balder could say anything more she darted into the forest. “Thank you Tivona” he whispered to her as she vanished from sight.
Having packed the few things he had Balder began the long journey back to civilization. Days later he stood on the edge of the forest overlooking the Vale, he turned to give his home one last look before leaving for an unknown amount of time. Balder thought that he saw the glint of wolf eye for a flash of a second before there was nothing. Turning back to the Vale and taking a deep breath Balder started on his next great journey.
