Black Company. A name that strikes fear to some, admiration
from others and respect from all. Composed of the Council of
the Eleven, the hidden and shadowy figures, help keep trade
safe and gold flowing in and out of all kingdoms. Known for
heroic deeds, but rumoured to be doing far sinister deeds.
Blamed for from everything from crop failure to plague to war,
the common peasant sneers at the black company, reluctant to
pay the tax collectors they protect. When they arrive such
complaints are hardly vocalized.
Whether by design or happenstance the black company has
neutral terms with every nation. They recruit anywhere and
everywhere which gives them a extraordinarily powerful fighting
force which they use to form smaller bands to help nations keep
trade and coin flowing. All profits are taken back to the heavily
fortified forsaken isles.
To criminals, adventurers or opportunists the black company is
worth a thought of joining. As with all things nothing is for free.
To join the black company and gain access to its many resources,
is to make a pact. This pact is reverently called the midnight contract
and magically enters a mortal into serving black company for ten
years. To run away is to be killed slowly and painfully by the magic
bound in you. To stay and serve is to fight armies, monsters, and
death numerous times.
Most do not survive long and it is no wonder that some criminals
offered a pardon for ten years wearing the yoke of black company,
are just as liable to choose hanging rather than face the horrors
rumoured. Those who do survive gain prestige, power, and skills that
are enviable to the outside world. Thus it is not all criminals in black
company but rather those who unafraid of death and strive to better
themselves.
